Our Founder's Story
Dr. Fung Fung Lim is an acupuncture specialist who treats aging skin, chronic conditions, chronic pain, women’s health, and various other neurological disorders such as peripheral neuropathy, Bell’s palsy, and concussion. She specializes in difficult-to-treat cases, with many patients finding her treatments life-changing.
College Education and Undergraduate Research
Throughout her undergraduate program, Dr. Lim’s focus was centered on Western medicine. She was a biochemistry major and participated in various medical research internships funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. At the University of Alaska in Anchorage, she studied the effect of chronic alcohol consumption on visceral fat deposition and the risk for type II diabetes. Her research at the University of California San Francisco involved the use of a gene silencing technique called RNAi to study genes associated with fat regulation to gain a better understanding of metabolic disorders such as type II diabetes and obesity. She has also spent a semester studying abroad at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.
Traditional Eastern Medicines
Growing up in Malaysia, Dr. Lim was exposed to a culture rich in tradition and knowledge of natural medicine. Malaysia has a high biodiversity level with an estimated 15,000 species of vascular plants. In fact, research shows that hibiscus, the national flower of Malaysia, is effective in helping to reduce mild to moderate hypertension by lowering both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Using her expertise in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Dr. Lim is able to treat chronic systemic diseases by prescribing customized herbal formulas for her patients. After her undergraduate work, she continued her TCM training at the Colorado School of Traditional Chinese Medicine and completed her Doctorate of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine at the Pacific College of Health and Science.
Holistic Approach to Health and Wellness
Dr. Lim is passionate about helping patients achieve healthier and more fulfilling lives through a holistic approach. While patients typically have specific concerns, the treatments provided serve those issues in addition to addressing mental and emotional wellness. Often, patients fall asleep while receiving treatments due to the stress-reducing effect of acupuncture.
Acupuncture for Pain Relief After Surgery
When her mother had knee replacement surgery, Dr. Lim personally witnessed some of the side effects of her mother’s pain medications. These medications impacted her mother so negatively that she struggled with feeling like herself and often hallucinated. Consequently, her mother chose to deal with the post-surgical pain rather than the side effects of her medication. Dr. Lim spent many hours researching alternative solutions to help her mother relieve her pain. This experience ultimately began her pursuit of acupuncture and holistic medicine.
Acupuncture Can Treat Both Chronic & Acute Pain
- Acupuncture improves circulation and decreases inflammation, which are the first steps to reducing chronic and acute pain.
- For the management of acute pain, acupuncture performed better than intravenous pain medication in terms of effectiveness in overall pain relief, reaction time, and safety in side effects.
