If you’ve ever heard of acupuncture and thought, “why would having needles stuck in my body help me feel better?” You’re not alone! Many first-time patients are shocked by how well this ancient treatment works. Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years, but it is only recently getting the spotlight it deserves. As more holistic approaches to our pain and health management are taken more seriously and as more research studies and patient testimonials come out, we are beginning to see what acupuncture has to offer us.
At Lim Acupuncture Clinic, with locations in Castle Rock and Centennial, Colorado, we blend Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with modern Western medicine to enhance our patients' mental and physical well-being so they can live happy, fulfilling lives. Whether you are just here to learn more for now or you're ready to book your first appointment, let's take a deep dive into what acupuncture is, what conditions it can treat, what you can expect at your first appointment, and why our licensed acupuncturist, Dr. Lim, and the staff at Lim Acupuncture Clinic can help you improve your well-being.
What is Acupuncture, Really?

Let’s begin with the basics: Acupuncture beliefs and treatment stem from Traditional Chinese Medicine. Acupuncture is often used in conjunction with other treatments, rather than as the sole treatment for patients. In acupuncture, thin, flexible, single-use needles are commonly used. They are so thin that it’s hard to believe they could even puncture our skin, and you can expect little to no pain during the insertion. So if you have a bit of a needle phobia or are worried about pain, don’t worry! Just let us know during your consultation so we can make the experience as relaxing and enjoyable for you as possible.
Next, let's look at the traditional explanation of acupuncture. Acupuncture works by assessing our body's energy, known as qi (pronounced “chee”). Qi is translated as “vital energy” of the body, and when qi is balanced within the body, our wellness and health follow. Our qi flows through meridians and channels – think of a highway system that flows through your body for your vitality. When there is a traffic jam, we begin to exhibit pain and possibly other symptoms. With the insertion of the needles, the goal is to open up the blockage or reduce the excess energy.
In terms of Western medicine, Qi correlates closely to our nervous system, circulation, and metabolic balance. The meridians and channels tend to correspond with nerve networks and connective tissue within our body. As we begin to have these pains or dysfunction, it is a sign that one or more parts of our bodies are not functioning optimally, or at least at some sort of deficit. When the acupuncture needles are inserted in these specific points, the needle acts as an antenna to help modulate pain, inflammation, and/or brain chemistry. Basically, acupuncture works like a “reset” button for your body.

Your First Appointment – Step by Step

Let's take you through an example appointment to help give you a better idea of what to expect at your first appointment at either our Castle Rock or Centennial Lim Acupuncture Clinic locations:
- Consultation: After your initial arrival and placement into one of our inviting and relaxing individual treatment rooms, Dr. Lim, our licensed acupuncturist, develops an individualized treatment plan for you. She takes her time getting to know her patients' health history and what brings them in today.
- Treatment: Acupuncture is not one-size-fits-all for treatment. With Dr. Lim’s experience and education, we are able to offer plenty of different treatment courses that will best fit your needs. We offer the following treatments, and Dr. Lim may recommend one or more types of treatment to help: Standard acupuncture, facial/cosmetic acupuncture, facial cupping, standard fire cupping, microneedling, dry needling, microcurrent, moxibustion (moxa), ozone therapy, B12 and Sarapin injections, herb consultations, and Celluma LED light therapy. You can find out more about our treatments here: Our Different Treatment Services.
- The Needles: Don’t worry! Most people barely feel them. Acupuncture needles are super small, more like a thin piece of thread than the big hospital-style needles. During a standard acupuncture treatment, Dr. Lim will insert the needles in specific acupuncture points that she’s determined will be beneficial to you, and they will stay inserted for 20 minutes. During those 20 minutes, you’ll be in a relaxing environment with calming music – some people even take a quick “acu-nap”!
- Post-Treatment: After relaxing, your needles will be taken out. This isn’t painful either; it only takes a minute. This is either where we will start your second form of treatment, or you’ll (hopefully!) be getting your next appointment set with us at the front desk. You can expect most treatment plans to be 2-3 visits a week for a few weeks to begin. Most patients leave feeling relaxed and refreshed, and some even notice improved sleep and reduced tension. Everybody heals on a different timeline, and our goal is to make consistent and noticeable progress towards your wellness goals.
