What is Cupping?

Cupping, or myofascial decompression, is an ancient therapy with many modern applications known to draw out toxins and keep inflammation under control. This therapy has been around for thousands of years as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine practices.

At Lim Acupuncture Clinic, we offer fire cupping which adds a warmth element to cupping. Our procedure uses a glass cup with heat to create suction that would force the skin to be drawn upward into the cup. This may result in bruising due to the tiny blood vessels under the skin being broken in cupped areas. Your body will then prompt an immune response to cupping by sending new, healthier blood to stimulate proper healing at a cellular level.

What Can Cupping Do For You?

Stagnant blood or fluid may cause pain, trap toxins, and suppress the body’s natural healing ability. Cupping helps to increase blood and lymph circulation, reduce inflammation, and boost your immune system. In addition to pain management, fire cupping is also helpful in treating chronic health conditions.

FAQ

What to expect for cupping?

During cupping your practitioner may apply some oil on your skin and move the cup in various directions over the affected area. Some redness should occur and bruising may also be expected. After cupping therapy, you should keep the area dry for about 2-3 hours (meaning no shower and no swimming). This is because cupping opens up the pores on your skin and the extra time will allow your body to settle after the procedure.

How long will the cupping bruise remain?

Cupping bruises are temporary and typically will disappear within 5-7 days.

Does cupping hurt?

Cupping generally does not hurt. However, if your muscles are extremely tight you may not be able to handle too much pressure from cupping initially. Your practitioner will communicate with you during the procedure and adjust cup pressure accordingly. Most patients experience immediate muscle relaxation after cupping. If you have chronic pain, you may be sore from cupping for about a day followed by a satisfying release of muscular tension after.

What do I need to know for my first appointment?

Prior to your first cupping treatment, your practitioner will go over your health history and inspect the problem area. You may not be able to receive cupping if you have certain medical conditions.

How long is a cupping session?

Fire cupping typically takes about 5 to 10 minutes.
