What is Peripheral Neuropathy and What Causes It?

Peripheral neuropathy is a condition where nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord (also known as the peripheral nerves) become damaged, leading to muscle weakness and pain. Common symptoms of peripheral neuropathy often include numbness, burning, stabbing, or extreme tingling sensations. Patients who are undergoing or have completed chemotherapy and patients diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes can become more prone to developing peripheral neuropathy.

Lim Acupuncture Clinic specializes in treating peripheral neuropathy associated with chemotherapy, diabetes, unknown causes, and cases where patients did not respond to medications, physical therapies, or other modalities.

treatments for peripheral neuropathy so patients can live a healthy quality life

One of the Best Natural Treatments for Peripheral Neuropathy

Acupuncture is considered to be one of the most effective natural treatments/therapies for peripheral neuropathy. Acupuncture focuses on long-term results—due to the chronic nature of this condition patients will usually need multiple weekly sessions for at least 3 months. Each patient receives individualized care based on the severity of specific symptoms. The main treatment goals would be to introduce appropriate nutrition for healing, improve circulation, and allow nerve regeneration to occur.

Other Natural Treatments for Peripheral Neuropathy

Dr. Lim is known for combining her expertise in eastern medicine modalities with modern science, technology, and medical research to deliver comforting, effective care for patients. Other therapies may be added to enhance treatment outcomes, such as electroacupuncture, vitamin injection, herbal medicine prescription, and frequency-specific microcurrent therapy. Her treatments have been known to help patients reduce symptoms, slow down peripheral neuropathy progressions, and improve patients’ quality of life.

Acupuncture for Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy

Because it destroys both cancerous cells and healthy cells, chemotherapy treatments can cause nerve damage to the point where a patient may find their nerves no longer work correctly. This often results in foot numbness (the most common place where patients experience nerve damage), hand numbness, and experiencing disgruntling patterns of extremely hot or cold sensations at all times. Acupuncture sessions can help the body rebuild itself after nerve damage, allowing patients relief from some of the intense side effects of chemotherapy treatments.

Some patients also have reported feeling these burning sensations because of the nerve damage caused by intensive medications.

Diabetes Induced Peripheral Neuropathy

According to the CDC, over 50% of all patients with diabetes have some form of nerve damage, typically concerning abnormally high blood sugar levels. Depending on the severity, diabetic patients can also develop feelings of numbness in their feet, toes, or ankles. Acupuncture can help patients with peripheral neuropathy related to diabetes by improving their blood flow and regenerating some of the damaged nerves.

FAQ

Can I participate in LAC’s peripheral neuropathy program if I’m also undergoing other treatments and therapies?

Absolutely! We will work with your doctor and other healthcare professionals to comanage your care. Treatments at our facility have minimal to no side effects and do not typically interfere with prescription medications.

Is acupuncture effective in treating peripheral neuropathy?

While acupuncture may not be a direct or universal cure, research has shown time and time again that it proves to be an effective treatment for relieving and improving symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. One reason behind the effectiveness of acupuncture is that it can target things that western medicine does not treat.

One of our patients in his 70s had been undergoing chemotherapy treatments. After a sensory loss assessment and a series of nerve sensation tests, it was revealed that he had 90% sensory loss on the left foot and 93% on the other foot before starting treatments with Dr. Lim. Although he sought holistic medicine as a last resort, the patient noticed a significant improvement after only 9 treatments at our clinic. His condition improved from 90-93% sensory loss to 50-53% sensory loss.

How many acupuncture sessions are needed for peripheral neuropathy?

It depends on the condition of the patient—some patients may start to experience improvement or see results after 15-20 treatments. However, due to the chronic nature of peripheral neuropathy, it may take 3 to 6 months to see significant symptom relief, especially if the symptoms have existed for more than 3 years.

Can acupuncture cure diabetes?

Acupuncture is not a cure for diabetes, cancer, or other serious diseases. However, it can improve blood circulation and reduce many unpleasant or intensive symptoms associated with chemo and diabetes-induced nerve damage. It offers an effective, safe, and natural treatment option for patients who have tried many medications (ie. gabapentin, pregabalin, amitriptyline, or tramadol) and other therapies with no relief.

What happens if peripheral neuropathy is not treated?

If left untreated, the underlying causes of peripheral neuropathy can lead to serious complications, such as foot ulcers, increased risk for infections, gangrene (death of body tissues), muscle paralysis, and even limb amputations.

Our Neuropathy Treatment Program

Z

An initial consultation is required with Dr. Lim to determine if you are a candidate for peripheral neuropathy treatment. If you qualify as a patient, treatment can begin on the same day as your consultation.

Z

During the consultation, the level of sensory loss will be observed through a series of tests.

Z

All individuals will receive a customized care plan depending on the severity of their neuropathy symptoms and their unique conditions.

Z

Treatment procedures may include but are not limited to acupuncture, electroacupuncture, microcurrent therapy, injection therapy, and herbal medicine supplementation.

Z

The number of procedures and the treatment frequency will vary based on the individual. Do expect to come in 2-3 times a week at the beginning of the program. The treatment frequency will be slowly reduced as we begin to see positive improvement.

Z

Routine treatment may be recommended to prevent future disease progression after completing our peripheral neuropathy program.
