November is a month that can be filled with quiet reflection–or the chaos and stress of the approaching holiday season. As the days grow shorter and the year comes to a close, it holds space for important observances, such as Stress Awareness Day on November 5th, Veterans Day on November 11th, and Men’s Health and Military Family Month throughout the month. It’s times like these that we are really reminded about how important our mental health is – not just for ourselves, but for those around us that we love and support.

In the spirit of these observations, this post will explore how acupuncture can help treat and offer relief from more than just physical pain. The quiet battles many of us face on our own don’t have to be handled on our own. Whether it’s easing anxiety, lifting symptoms of depression, or helping the body regulate its stress response, acupuncture offers a gentle, holistic way to restore balance. In this blog, we’ll touch on how acupuncture can help those who are stressed, how it can help those specifically with anxiety and depression, men’s mental health, and why you can trust Lim Acupuncture Clinic to help take care of you.

Stress Is a Silent Weight, Acupuncture Lightens the Load

A practitioner performs acupuncture on a patient’s arm to relieve stress and support emotional balance.

Stress is something that we have all experienced, whether in small doses that we can handle or in larger doses that can be overwhelming. People who are dealing with chronic stress are believed to have an unbalanced sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (rest and digest) nervous system. Chronic stress has been shown to increase your cardiovascular risks, musculoskeletal disorders, and mental health issues. There is a reason stress is known as a silent killer. Because stress shows up differently for each person, it can be difficult to recognize when someone—yourself included—may need support.

Common symptoms of chronic stress are:

  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Digestive Issues
  • Headaches
  • Tension

If you’ve made it this far, you are probably wondering how acupuncture could really make that much of a difference, and you aren’t alone. Being treated with tiny needles may not sound relaxing, but many patients describe the experience as deeply calming. Research suggests that acupuncture may help support nervous system regulation, promote a more balanced stress response, and encourage the release of feel-good neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine. If you’d like to read more about why acupuncture has this effect, please visit our blog post titled “Acupuncture 101” to learn more about how acupuncture works.

Chronic stress isn’t always easy to treat—life is busy, and finding time to unwind can feel impossible. That’s why we work hard to make your time at Lim Acupuncture Clinic worthwhile. In both our Castle Rock and Centennial locations, we create a peaceful, restorative environment from the moment you walk in. Many patients tell us they arrive feeling tense or overwhelmed but leave feeling calmer, clearer, and more grounded—some even describe the sensation as “riding a wave” afterward.

Support for Anxiety & Depression

A healthcare professional offers support to a patient dealing with stress while discussing acupuncture benefits.

Conversations around anxiety and depression have grown significantly in recent years, and many people are turning to holistic options to support their emotional well-being. Symptoms such as nausea, insomnia, persistent low mood, headaches, or migraines can impact daily life, and acupuncture can be a supportive addition to your care plan.

You don’t need to be on medications to receive treatment at Lim Acupuncture Clinic. However, studies are emerging that suggest doing acupuncture along with your prescribed medications can increase the effectiveness in curbing or eliminating patients' symptoms of anxiety and depression and help reduce certain side effects. Many patients appreciate that acupuncture offers a natural way to support their mental and physical wellness without impacting their existing care.

Auricular Acupuncture: Gentle Support for Emotional Balance

Auricular acupuncture is a specialized style of acupuncture that is effective at treating anxiety and depression symptoms. What is auricular acupuncture, though? This style of acupuncture is done specifically on the outer parts of your ear. It stems from the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) belief that the ear is a microsystem or even a miniature of the body.

Diagram of the inverted fetus map used in auricular acupuncture, showing how different points on the ear correspond to body areas such as the heel, gluteus, abdomen, chest, joints, and facial features; often referenced in acupuncture treatments for stress and overall wellness.

In the 1950s, a French physician expanded on this belief, concluding that an inverted fetus contributes to the shape of the ear. The head is at the bottom of our earlobe, and the feet are curled towards the top of our ear. TCM researchers then conducted studies on this and verified the findings to be accurate. From there, they developed ear maps/charts, and the rest is history! Auricular acupuncture can be performed using needles or by applying other stimulation methods, such as a massage or electroacupuncture.

A popular style of auricular acupuncture is called the NADA protocol. This protocol involves inserting thin, small needles into the outer ear at 5 specific points. These points are: sympathetic, shen men, liver, kidney, and lung. The NADA protocol was developed in 1985, and it was created in response to the opioid epidemic. It turned out to be pretty effective at helping others with anxiety, depression, and other emotional trauma as well. It’s normally practiced in small groups as a non-verbal form of therapy. At Lim Acupuncture Clinic, we treat it as your own personal relaxing session, no therapist needed. Our licensed acupuncturist, Dr. Lim, frequently uses this method and has seen many patients experience significant relief.

Men’s Mental Health: Breaking the Pattern of Silence

A diverse group of men smiling outdoors, representing community support and emotional wellness—an important part of managing stress alongside acupuncture treatments.

Did you know that 1 in 10 men deal with mental health issues like depression and anxiety, yet less than half of those men receive treatment? Men often face internal battles of the mind quietly for many reasons – social expectations, a need to “stay strong,” or simply because they don't recognize their symptoms as signs of stress. While there is a lot of crossover in symptoms for men and women, such as loss of interest in things you used to love, hopelessness, and lack of energy, here is a list of unique symptoms seen in men:

  • Displaying escapist or avoidant behavior
  • Aggressive, irritable, or controlling behavior
  • Substance abuse
  • Risk-taking behavior

Stress often presents in men through irritability, frustration, muscle tension, or withdrawal from loved ones rather than obvious emotional expressions. Many men don't realize physical changes like back tightness, neck pain, headaches, and digestive issues are actually stress signals. Acupuncture is beneficial here because it addresses both the emotional burden and the physical manifestations that many men experience.

For many male patients, acupuncture provides a rare opportunity to relax without pressure, judgment, or expectation fully. As the nervous system shifts out of fight-or-flight mode, many men report feeling calmer, more present, and more in control of their thoughts and emotions.

Having a designated space to unwind, relax, and reset is something many people deeply need but don't often allow themselves the time and space to do so.
